Details: This is typically a 40 hour a week position, though, periodic overtime may be required. An active Washington State Private Applicators License is required for this position. If the selected candidate does not possess one, that person must obtain one within the six month probationary period to maintain employment in this position. 4 ten hour day work weeks can be scheduled during April through October. Please refer to "Application Special Instructions" in order to be considered for position.

Position Summary

The Landscapers’ position is a general maintenance role within the Central Services Department, which is primarily located at the Grant County Courthouse but may be called upon to perform work at any County location. The ideal candidate will have the ability and willingness to adapt to changing work assignments; to operate equipment and to use the tools and materials encountered in parks maintenance activities with efficiency and safety; to input and retrieve data on electronic devices including computer terminals; to plant, fertilize, edge, trim, mow, weed, and water lawns, plants, shrubs and/or trees; to follow oral and written instructions, to work effectively without close supervision; to work outdoors in all weather conditions; to practice the highest level of customer service; to understand and practice concepts of teamwork, accountability, and seamless service.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following examples of duties and accountabilities illustrate the general range of tasks assigned to the position but are not intended to define the limits of required duties. Other essential duties may be assigned consistent with the general scope of the position. Employee must comply with all County and department policies, procedures, WAC’s, or other regulatory bodies.

  • General Service: Ensures that work assignments are accomplished; reports reasons for any delays; reports the time and tasks performed and materials used through a computerized maintenance management system.
  • Landscaping: Waters, fertilizes, mows, weeds, edges, and replaces turf pursuant to established maintenance schedule or after assessment of needs. Plants, waters, and maintains ornamental plants, shrubs, hedges, and flowers. Prepares soils for various kinds of planting and cultivates around plants, shrubs, and trees. Will move and place rock products, dirt, sand, and other landscape materials when required.
  • Equipment Operation: This work requires the use of power equipment including power mowers, trimmers, trucks, backhoes, and tractors, cars, light trucks, side by sides, forklift, skid steer, mini ex etc. must have a good driving record, must be a safety-first minded team member. Tasks also include routine maintenance and repair of irrigation systems.
  • Grounds and General Maintenance: This involves mowing, raking, sweeping, irrigating, pulling of weeds, and trimming lawns, trees, flowers, and shrubs. Snow and Ice removal during the winter, keeping pathways free of ice. Incumbents perform preventive and general maintenance of vehicles and grounds maintenance equipment as well as assisting in setting up platforms, tents, displays, seating, and other arrangements for events. Assigned work also includes trash collection, Cleaning of public areas, sanitizing of public areas.
  • Maintenance Support: This position will assist higher level maintenance personnel as required and performs other duties as assigned.

Education, Experience, and Licensing

Required

  • Excellent Customer Service.
  • Ground's maintenance experience including management of turf and horticulture.
  • Operation of mechanical and power tools and equipment as well as rolling stock such as tractors, trucks, and riding mowers.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Must complete a background check.
  • Driving Abstract: Must have an acceptable driving report

Required within first six months of employment

  • Obtain a Public applicators and right of ways license within 6 months for the application of pesticides, herbicides, and various fertilizers.
  • Basic First Aid and CPR

These skills and abilities typically are acquired through a combination of experience and training, which would include experience in building maintenance, or repair involving the use of carpentry and basic electrical and plumbing repair or installation for a total of not less than two years of related experience and training.


Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Working Conditions:

Work is performed outdoors and in a variety of buildings. The work involves substantial physical efforton a regular basis. Typical work week is Monday through Friday 7am-3pm. However, due to weatherconditions and/or the needs of the County, particularly in the winter months due to snow and ice andsummer months due to heat may vary.
